Kerinci cassia cinnamon from Indonesia — the GI origin, tested and packed
By the TapakNusa export desk · updated 2026-09-04. For spice houses, craft food brands and private-label programs that want real cassia with a verifiable origin — and the price honesty most listings skip.
1. The origin
Kerinci (Jambi, Sumatra) is the heart of Indonesian cassia — and Indonesia is a top world cassia exporter (≈US$140M in 2024 per OEC/UN Comtrade data, the US the largest single market at ~$66M ≈ 47%). Kerinci holds a geographical indication (GI) registration, including protection in the EU — the origin name is legally defensible, which matters the moment your brand prints "Kerinci" on a shelf.
2. The price honesty most listings skip
Cassia prices have been in a downtrend for years (around -20% since 2019 across market trackers) — any origin guide that hides this is selling hope. The consequence for buyers: the money is not in betting on the commodity price; it is in the quality class. Quilling grades with consistent oil content, clean moisture control (≤14%), and food-grade packing for craft brands in the US/EU — tested lots with documents, sold to buyers who pay for reliability instead of the cheapest container. That is the lane we built this program for.
3. What we measure per lot
- Moisture ≤14% · oil content (the flavour number) · grade (quilling A/B, broken, powder)
- Photo/video record of the actual lot — yours to check before it ships
- COA in our standard format, lot code consistent across invoice, packing list and B/L
4. Documents, both sides
Plant-product export: phytosanitary certificate per shipment (Barantin), Certificate of Origin (Form D for ASEAN; other forms per destination), invoice and packing list. Importer-side registrations are yours (e.g. US FDA facility registration and prior notice for food shipments) — we align labels, packing declarations and documents to them. EU buyers: the GI registration supports "Kerinci" claims; organic claims wait until a certified lot actually exists, per our standing rule.
5. What we can honestly promise today
Cassia sits in our sourcing calendar as a lot-confirmed program: supplier verification in the Kerinci corridor is in progress, so availability is confirmed per order — samples first (labelled, sealed), then LCL, then program volumes. If your brief genuinely needs the cheapest mixed cassia at container scale, we will say so and point you to the bulk market rather than fake a premium.
Cassia vs Ceylon — should we even sell cassia?
Different products: cassia is the bold, sweet-hot cinnamon of baking and spice blends; Ceylon is the delicate premium stick. Craft brands sell cassia honestly by naming it Cinnamomum aromaticum/burmannii — we supply the tested Indonesian version, not a re-labelled Ceylon story.
What MOQ is realistic for a first order?
Sample lots first; LCL trials in the hundreds of kg; program volume once the grade and packing are agreed. Send your target spec — one working day, target.
Can you do private-label retail packing?
Food-grade retail packing runs through partner processors — quoted per SKU with the packing spec written into the contract before anything is produced.
